HCM CITY (VNS) — Independent contemporary dance company Arabesque will tour the US this month to play its Suong Som (The Mist) at five shows in St Louis Washington DC, Birmingham, and San Diego.
The play will provide American audiences a glimpse into life in a country often obscured by the lingering shadows of the past.
The troupe will perform from October 24 to November 15.
Arabesque is organised under the artistic direction of Nguyen Tan Loc, an alumnus of Tokyo's Fujisato Ballet Company, and the guidance of a Kiev-trained ballerina.
According to the company, pieces like The Mist, an evening-length contemporary dance piece, aim to bridge the gap between the traditional – from folk dances to the small gestures that define everyday relationships in Vietnamese culture – and global contemporary dance.
Through contemporary dance movements accompanied by the rhythm of cai luong (reformed opera) percussion and zither, the audience get a unique perspective of the peaceful countryside.
Its previous version was warmly embraced in 2011 and 2012, and was also staged abroad, including in South Korea. — VNS
