HA NOI (VNS) – Viet Nam yesterday pocketed two gold medals from the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China.
Nguyen Thi Truc Mai made a stunning leap of 5.90m to win the girls' long jump, leaving behind Hong Jingwen from China and Chuaimaroeng Parinya from Thailand.
Minutes later, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien earned a second medal, a gold, in the girls' 200m backstroke. Vien, who previously bagged a silver in the 100m backstroke, finished first with a time of 2min 12.65 – her best for the season.
Second place went to Im Dason of South Korea (2:15.09) who beat Vien in the 100m backstroke. Wan Ching Man Andrea of Hong Kong came third (2:19.82).
On the track, Vietnamese also grabbed two silvers. The girls' 100m hurdle was won by Nguyen Thi Lan and the 2,000m steeplechase by Tran Thi Mai.
Viet Nam have strongly improved their position in the ranking. With two gold, four silver and one bronze medals, the team ranks eighth.
China has no rivals for top place. They have 36 golds, 20 silvers and 21 bronzes. South Korea are running second while Thailand replace North Korea in third place. – VNS
