Vietnamese players win bronze medals in chess championship

HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam's women's and men's teams won bronze medals at the rapid event in the ongoing 2014 Asian Nations Cup (Open and Women's Chess Team Championships) in Tabriz, Iran yesterday.

The men's team of veterans Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Duc Hoa and the talented and young Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy lost to Kazakhstan's team with a score of 2.5-1.5 in the semi-finals. They got the bronze medal.

The win helped Kazakhstan to play better in the final. They beat No 1 seed China to win the title.

The women's team, comprising Nguyen Thi Thanh An, Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Hoang Thi Nhu Y and Nguyen Mai Hung, lost to China 3-1 in the semi-finals and got the bronze medal.

Today, Viet Nam will compete in the standard chess event. The tournament will end on May 30. —  VNS
