HA NOI — Marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh has been named the sixth Vietnamese athlete to earn an Olympic ticket to London this summer.
Vinh, with 682.4 points, ranked fourth after rivals from South Korea, China and Japan in the men's 10m pistol event at the Asian Shooting Championship in Qatar on Sunday.
According to the rules, only the top two athletes from each event can qualify to compete at Olympics but all three rivals already had tickets so Vinh automatically took the only berth.
Vinh was Viet Nam's first ever athlete to secure an Olympic shooting berth.
However, Asian Games silver medallist Ha Minh Thanh is also expected to secure a ticket to London in the coming days as he competes in the men's 25m rapid pistol event.
