HA NOI (VNS) — Vietnamese chess players retained their No 1 position after taking the lead at the 16th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships 2015 in Singapore.

The team brought home 68 gold, 44 silver and 29 bronze medals. The Philippines came second with 26 gold, 42 silver and 17 bronze medals, while the hosts Singapore came third with 11 gold, 11 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Viet Nam's gold haul is more than the combined gold medals won by countries placed between the second and eighth ranks, and their total haul of 141 medals is more than the rest combined.

Viet Nam have been the overall champions of the event since it was first organised in the country in 2000.

The championship, organised from June 8 to 17, attracted the participation of 457 players from 17 countries and territories. Viet Nam sent the largest delegation of 132 players to the annual event.

The participants competed in the standard, rapid and blitz chess events in the Open and Girls' U-8, U-10, U-12 and U-14, as well as U-16, U-18 and U-20 age groups, and the optional 50+ and 65+ age groups. — VNS
