Artists focus on canvas

HÀ NỘI — Three artists are telling their personal and unique stories through paintings at the ongoing exhibition entitled Toan (Canvas) in Hà Nội.

Artists Tào Linh, Doãn Hoàng Lâm and Nguyễn Vân Chung are showing their paintings which were made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exhibition is a good chance for fine art lovers to view the oil-on-canvas paintings by the artists.

At the exhibition, Tào Linh's paintings are metaphorical, monochromatic and minimal.

His paintings seem to have an unusual composition which belies a logical form. The basic coloured spaces may make exhibition goers think about the story behind each painting.

“Most of the works on display were made during the COVID-19 period but the theme of the work is not directly related to the pandemic but it is more about people,” said Linh.

“Social distancing affects many people, including artists. However, it seems positive to the artist when they always work independently. But it makes them think more about their profession and about the work.

“This exhibition is quite different from my other group exhibitions before. With only three artists at the exhibition, we hope exhibition-goers will focus on enjoying our works.”

Lâm has 15 paintings of expressionism to be displayed at the exhibition, with 13 of them about women.

“Expressionism needs a strong emotion which an artist cannot create,” said Lâm.

“It is really fate because I paint with all the emotions and experiences that life brings. Each painting is completed as a part of my body making a value that I have on the journey of creating art.”

The paintings by Chung are abstractionist. His paintings are mainly black, white and grey tone.

Toan exhibition runs until September 16 at 29 Hàng Bài Street, Hà Nội. — VNS
