HA NOI — On Saturday, Manzi Art Space will present ?! – a solo exhibition showcasing new paintings by Hue-based artist Nguyen Dinh Hoang Viet.

Viet is best known for his trompe l’oeil (a type of realist optical illusion art) portraits of rodents and fish looking trancelike, as if dreaming.

The latest work in the continuation of the animal series – presented as the first half of ?! – features painted renditions of dead chickens, ducks and crabs. This time, however, they are flanked by comical exclamation marks and empty, black speech bubbles.

The second half of ?! showcases Viet’s venture into a new area of interest – everyday objects – for which he has been producing 2D replicas of things we see daily with his trademark photorealist precision.

The exhibition will open at 6.30pm on Saturday, and run until December 6. Manzi Art Space is at 14 Phan Huy Ich Street. Entry is free. — VNS
