HA NOI — Hosted by The thao & Van hoa (Sport & Culture) newspaper, the 14th Devotion Music Awards will give out prizes for the best show, best album and best singer of the year, the organisation board said yesterday in Ha Noi.

The Show of The Year category has the most nominations with eight. They include shows by A-list singers such as Thanh Lam, My Linh and Tung Duong. The show Anh Trang Tinh Yeu (Moonlight of Love) was the first concert by singer Lan Anh and the first time she was nominated for the award.

"It is lucky for me to be nominated for the award with my first concert," said Anh. "I think that music makers including singers like me are happy because there is a music award like this one to honour the profession."

The show combines Vietnamese songs and opera for the singer to show off her vocal ability.

Four nominations were given to the shows by established singers Vu Thang Loi, Pham Phuong Thao, Ha Anh Tuan and Dong Nhi.

Lan Anh, Thanh Lam and Tung Duong were nominated in the Singer of the Year category.

The Devotion Music Awards are held annually by The thao & Van hoa newspaper to promote Vietnamese music and honour artists who have made significant contributions to the industry. There are nine categories.

There are five nominations for Producer of the Year including Pham Thanh Ha, Tien Cookie, Do Hieu, Duong K and Vo Thien Thanh. Thanh is the most veteran musician of the bunch, having previous won Musician of the Year in 2007 and 2008. His album Saigon Feel made an impression by combining jazz with pop, R&B and hip-hop.

Saigon Feel is one of six nominations in the Album of the Year category, along with Chat uith Mozart 2 by popular singer My Linh. Singer and veteran composer Duong Thu wrote lyrics for classical melodies by Mozart, Bach, Liszt and others. Chat with Mozart 1 won the award in 2006.

Stardom represents a milestone in the career of singer-songwriter Vu Cat Tuong. The album was at the top of the Apple Music charts in Viet Nam ahead of even Namanana by Lay and A Star Is Born by Lady Gaga.

Thien Than Sa Nga (Depraved Angel) by singer-songwriter Bui Lan Huong introduced dreampop – a new music genre in Viet Nam. Dreampop is subgenre of alternative-rock and is not well known in Viet Nam.

Huong also received a nomination for New Artist of the Year. This category will also consider Lon Xon Band, JustaTee, Phung Khanh Linh, and Thai Vu.

Hanh Tinh Song Song (Parallel Planet) and Hom Nay Toi Buon (I’m Sad Today) by Vu and Linh are two contenders for Song of the Year.

Other categories include Musician of the Year, Music Video of the Year and Music Programme of the Year. The award ceremony will be held on April 16 at HCM Municipal Theatre. VNS
