HA NOI — Dao Anh Khanh will host the largest event in his contemporary art series Dong Chay Ngan Nam (A Thousand-Year Flow) on Friday.

Cay Doi (Tree of Life) is a large-scale installation occupied by an art performance.

The 51-year-old artist will utilise bamboo shoots, which symbolise human strength and liveliness, for his installation.

Entitled Nang Luong Goc (Original Energy), the installations have been set up in an open-air venue on a 1km section of Ngoc Thuy Dyke in the city's Long Bien District.

"Through the language of art, I want to present the city's image when it is affected by the environment. Furthermore, I want to express the ambition to live in a peaceful world, where all the people are friends, and in harmony with nature and the universe," he said.

Khanh has spent three months working to complete 36 bamboo sculptures, which are 9-15m in height and 3-4m in width.

The iron-frame and nylon-covered bamboo sculptures will be used as a background for the performance that will be presented by Khanh and more than 300 performers on Friday night.

The performance will feature a mixture of various contemporary art forms, including installations, music, dance, video art and lights.

According to Khanh, 36 young women who symbolise old Ha Noi's pure beauty when it originally had 36 streets, will dance inside the bamboo sculptures.

Choreographed by Khanh, the repertoire will also feature 50 Muong ethnic amateur performers.

Another installation, Four Seasons, will feature hundreds of metres of cloth with abstract drawings. The artwork expresses the idea of "living beings non-stop growth and development throughout the seasons".

The highlight of the show on Friday night will be Khanh's performance on a stage shaped like a human body.

"Human beings and nature should be in harmony. That is the idea behind my performance," Khanh said.

The performance will take place in his studio, at No 7 Lane 462, Ngoc Thuy Ward, Long Bien District, at 8pm on Friday. About 2,500 people are expected to attend the invitation-only show.

"For those who don't have chance to get inside [the precinct], they will be able to witness what is taking place thanks to a large screen outside the precinct," Khanh said.

After the 90-minute performance inside the studio, audiences will have a chance to enjoy another performance in an open-air venue on Ngoc Thuy Dyke.

Vietnamese musicians Tri Minh, Xuan Son, and Luong Hue Trinh will join five Danish musicians to perform contemporary music. Popular singer Tung Duong will also perform at the event.

Twelve models will showcase body paintings by Vietnamese painter Phuong Vu Manh and the US female painter Shannon Corrigan.

A video clip by French artist Jean Marc will also be screened at the event.

After the performance the installation pieces will remain on display until October 20. — VNS
