HCM CITY — "Same same but different" is a message from a group of 10 artists from Ha Noi in their exhibit now showing at the HCM City Fine Arts Museum.

The exhibit includes 157 works in different styles, using traditional materials such as giay do (poonah paper) and lacquer.

"Many things are repeated over and over in our lives, but each time and for each person it is different," said Pham Ngoc Lieu, one of the event's three male artists.

"Through my sketching, I'm trying to show that even when things are constantly repeated, there is an evolution and change that makes them different," said the 58-year-old artist.

Lieu said his 30 works "combine facts and feelings" and the best ones capture love, peace and people in daily life.

His highlighted works include O Du Kich Vinh Linh (Vinh Linh Female Guerrilla), a work featuring a female guerrilla in Vinh Linh District, a common battle site in Quang Tri Province's during the American war.

Ta Thi Thanh Tam found her source of inspiration in rural children.

All of her 13 lacquer and oil paintings, which portray children, use vivid colours like red and banana-green to capture the beauty of peaceful scenes in the countryside.

Talking about her work, Tam said, "My art takes shape from the deepest part of my thoughts and love of art, life and people."

She added that she loves the traditional art of Dong Ho painting on poonah paper. "My works include both traditional and contemporary styles."

Using red, Tam's Du Quay (Swings) is a picture featuring a group of children playing together in the sunshine.

The youngest participant Vu Thu Hien portrays human faces in different shapes and states of mind. Her lacquer and paper works are vivid.

"For me, life is a secret world drawing me in to discover it further," said 40-year-old Hien, adding that she hopes visitors to the exhibition will be able to understand their message that "changing is living".

The event is part of a larger programme to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Ha Noi, launched by the Viet Nam Fine Arts Association, the Ha Noi Fine Arts Association and the HCM City Fine Arts Museum.

The exhibit can be seen at the HCM City Fine Arts Museum, 97A Pho Duc Chinh Street, District 1, until tomorrow. — VNS
