City kids encouraged to go green

HCM CITY — More than 2,000 children from the city's 24 districts celebrated Children's Day at the opening ceremony of a "green summer" campaign at the Suoi Tien Theme Park yesterday.

Officials from the HCM City's People's Committee and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in HCM City called on the city as a whole to care for and create a positive enviroment for children, especially those in disadvantaged situations.

Like last year, this summer's Thanh Pho Mau Xanh Cua Em (Children's Green City) programme seeks to instill greater awareness of environment protection in children and to encourage their participation in keeping the environment safe and clean.

This summer's programme will have several entertainment activities through August 10 including tours to museums and historical sites.

The city will also organise many camps to help the children learn the value of the natural environment. The Youth Cultural House will organise programmes teaching various life skills to children between eight and 15 years of age every Saturday and Sunday.

Besides outdoor activities such as camping, the city will also organise charitable events to help disadvantaged children.

Hua Ngoc Thuan, deputy chairman of the municipal People's Committee, said at the opening ceremony that he wanted the joy of summer to come to children living everywhere in the city including those living in orphanages. He hoped the children will fully participate in environment projects.

The city gave away 32 scholarships of between VND1million and VND5 million each yesterday. — VNS
