Famed literary critic dies at 81

HA NOI — Writer and literary critic Hoang Ngoc Hien died here on Monday of colon cancer. He was 81.

Hien was born in the central province of Ha Tinh in 1930 and began to work as a teacher in 1949. He then completed his PhD in literature in the former Soviet Union and subsequently taught at the Vinh Teachers' Training College, Ha Noi's Culture College and the Nguyen Du Writing School.

He was awarded the Viet Nam Writers' Prize in 1985 for his translation of the works of Russian writer Vladimir Mayakovski. He also wrote books on contemporary Russian literature, literary study, and literary philosophy.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Funeral House of the Ministry of National Defence, 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Ha Noi. — VNS
