HCM CITY — With the first month of the lunar calendar considered an auspicious time to begin new ventures, many TV-serial makers have been shooting their first scenes in recent days.

Chanh Phuong Film Production and Tri Viet Media Corporation were the first of the block, shooting new episodes of their Du Gio Co Thoi (Even Wind Is Blowing) last Friday, five days into the lunar year.

The 200-episode series, directed by Vietnamese-American Charlie Nguyen, Thai Hoa and Phuong Dien, narrates the life of four generations of a family living under the same roof and was being shown on HCM City Television's HTV3 before the Lunar New Year holidays.

Its broadcast resumes on March 15.

Four other studios began shooting new serials on Monday, including two films revolving around the troubles in a family.

Giai Phong Film Production's Gia Dinh Song Gio (Family's Troubles) is about a large family with many generations living together.

Xuan Cuong, who is directing the 35-episode series, said it would be a race to finish it in time for broadcast on Vinh Long Television in June.

HCM City-based Television Film Studio's 30-episode Me va Con (Mother and Son) is based on events and feelings between a mother and her son and is planned to be aired on HTV9 at the end of this year.

M&T Picture's Sac Dep va Danh Vong (Beauty and Glory) is about the lives of beauty-pageant winners and director Ly Khac Lynh hopes to finish its 40 episodes in time for HTV to broadcast it in April.

HTV will also broadcast World Star Film Production's TV series Tinh Ca Pho (Love Songs on Streets). Director Xuan Phuoc's 30-episode film will be about a bunch of youngsters who come to the big city and set up businesses and their romances. — VNS
