HA NOI — As part of the 1,000th anniversary activities of Ha Noi, the animated atmosphere of former craft villages and craft streets will be depicted in Ha Noi with 200 booths and the participation of thousands of craftspeople.

The event, which will show the close link between the old capital of Thang Long and the craft villages during the 1,000-year period, will be organised by the ministries of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Agriculture and Rural Development from September 16 – 21 at Ha Noi's Bach Thao Park.

During the six-day exhibition, the five most popular craft villages, Bat Trang Pottery Village, Kieu Ky Gold Plating Village, Van Phuc Silk Village, Son Dong Craft Village, Phu Vinh Bamboo and Rattan Village, and 36 craft streets in Ha Noi will be showcased.

In addition, products and techniques of traditional crafts from Viet Nam's northwest, the Hong (Red) River Delta, Central Highlands, central region, and the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta will be featured.

Past-and-present photos of historic craft villages and the 36 craft streets of Ha Noi, as well as nine huge craft products registered for the Viet Nam Book of Records, will be on display.

Among the items will be a 35m ceramic dragon made by craftsmen at Bat Trang Pottery Village, a huge rattan fan, an ao dai made of 1,000 flowers by artisan Nguyen Manh Hung and a pho gom (pottery street) by Tran Manh Tuan from Bat Trang Pottery Village.

According to organisers, the event will be an opportunity to introduce Viet Nam's crafts to visitors and honour craftspeople who have created new products and contributed to the country's craft villages.

During the event, artisans will honour their ancestors who worked in their respective fields by conducting an incense-burning ceremony.

When Ha Noi, formerly called Thang Long, was formed nearly 1,000 years ago, it was considered the country's cultural centre, where every dynasty left behind their imprint.

Even though some historic artifacts have not survived through wars and time, the capital still has many cultural and historic sites.

During the 1,000-year period, 36 craft streets were established and many craft villages were founded.

Excellent craftspeople from around the country gathered at the capital to earn their living. Today, traditional crafts are the pride of the country, and still reflect the people's character and soul. — VNS
