HA NOI — The Ha Noi's authorities announced yesterday that they would cancel the proposal for "gifts buried in a time capsule to send to the future" as not feasible.
The announcement was made by the Secretary of the city's Party Committee, Pham Quang Nghi, at a meeting of leaders from 29 districts and towns across the city.
The proposal was the idea of a single individual, which had not been approved by the city's authorities, he said. "The selection of objects for the ‘time capsule' is not simple. The city's People's Committee has not approved such a proposal because it is not feasible," he said.
Earlier the Ha Noi Culture, Sports and Tourism Department held a press conference to announce the project, which was proposed by the Ha Noi Culture Fund's vice-chair, Vu Phuong.
Under the proposal, all 63 provinces and cities would contribute a single object for the time capsule. A further 937 items were due to be chosen to represent the country's cultural characteristics and technological level, totalling 1,000 objects, one for each year of the capital.
Objects lined up for the time capsule included typical items used in daily life and were to be stored in a 1,000 litre air-tight container so that future generations could learn more about life today.
The objects selected by cities and provinces were to have been typical of the regions they originated from, summarising the culture, technological level and lives of people living there.
Organisers had planned to bury the container in the grounds of Ha Noi Museum on Pham Hung Street in September under a lotus-shaped monument. — VNS
