Jazz concert celebrates artist's anniversary

HA NOI -- A jazz concert will be held on April 2 in Ha Noi to celebrate the tenth anniversary of musician Trinh Cong Son.

The concert will be performed by a group of amateur singers, and will feature 20 of Son's most popular songs.

Lead singers Khoi Minh and Nguyet Ca along with pianist Khang Nhi said they hoped the concert would be a chance for Son's fans to enjoying his love ballads with a jazz twist.

Khoi Minh is a reporter for Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper. He released an album in 2009 featuring two songs by Son. Nguyet Ca is an English teacher. She is the founder of Trinh's Music Box, an online music facility that has been running for nine years.

The two singers recently performed some of Son's songs at a show to raise funds for flood victims in the central provinces.

Trinh Cong Son (1939 – 2001) was a Vietnamese composer, musician, painter and songwriter. He was widely considered as one of the most salient figures of modern Vietnamese music.

Son wrote over 600 songs and during the 1960s and 1970s, and American singer Joan Baez dubbed him the Bob Dylan of Viet Nam for his moving antiwar songs. His music remains very popular among both old and young Vietnamese. -- VNS
