Jazz concert to gather renowned artists

HÀ NỘI A musical concert featuring jazz masters from various countries around the world will be held at the concert hall of the Vietnam National Academy of Music (VNAM) on October 7.

The 5th Jazz & Friends concert is organised to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Jazz Department at the VNAM. The event will be directed by Associate Professor Dr. Lê Anh Tuấn, the Director of the academy.

Many renowned Vietnamese jazz artists such as Quyền Thiện Đắc, Lương Xuân Thịnh, Hoàng Xuân Tùng and Lương Việt Tú from the Jazz Glory band will perform with the event.

The international artists participating in the concert include Professor Hakan Rydin from Sweden, Dr Steve Barry, Damon Poppleton, Bernice Tesara, Cailey Soon, and George Greenhill from Australia. Two special guests are artists Nguyễn Tuấn Nam and Đào Kiên.

According to the director of VNAM, Associate Professor Dr. Lê Anh Tuấn, the 5th Jazz & Friends concert has been planned for over a year.

“It is a tribute to the first generation, the educators, and researchers in the training and study of jazz music in Việt Nam.

“It also introduces to the public the younger generation of Vietnamese jazz musicians and the integration of Vietnamese jazz music with the world,” he said.

The jazz artists will perform classic and well-known compositions such as Nostalgia, Moonlight in Vermont, Breezin, Inh Lả Ơi (a Vietnamese folk song arranged by Trần Lưu Hoàng), and Feels Like Home (by Nguyễn Tuấn Nam).

Before becoming an independent department at the VNAM, jazz was a subject within the curriculum. The establishment of an independent jazz department has created one of the reputable cradles for training numerous jazz musicians in Việt Nam.

Since 2018, Jazz & Friends has been an annual programme organised to honour Vietnamese jazz artists, particularly those who have been trained at the academy.

The concert will be broadcasted on VTV1 and Hanoi Television channels. VNS
