HA NOI — Singer-songwriter Mai Khoi took the top prize in the Bai Hat Viet (Vietnamese Songs) competition on Sunday night in HCM City for her song entitled simply Viet Nam.

"I see the beauty of my country in the eyes and smiles of young people, and I hope listeners will share with my thoughts," Khoi said before singing the song in the competition's final round of performances on Saturday night.

Khoi is the second woman to win the top prize in Bai Hat Viet, following Le Cat Trong Ly in 2008.

Writing songs since 2003, Khoi has composed such popular hits as Mot Ngay Khoi (Khoi One Day) and Huong Tinh Nhan (Scent of a Lover). Her latest album, Made in Mai Khoi, was recognised on HCM City Television's Golden Album programme last June as the month's most impressive album.

"I have to say thank you to my parents who have supported me strongly ever since I began sending my songs into Bai Hat Viet in 2006," Khoi said while receiving the award. "The prize will encourage me to continue my creative work."

The song Uong Tra (Drink Tea) by Toan Thang won the audience prize in the Bai Hat Viet competition over the weekend, while the song La Co (Flag) by Ta Quang Thang received the experimental prize and Viet Nam Musicians Association prize.

Songwriter Luu Thien Huong's Ho Guom Sang Som (Early Morning at Sword Lake) was named best pop song and marked Huong's fifth appearance in the final round of Bai Hat Viet. Composer Le Ha Nguyen was named most talented composer while composer Thanh Tam was honoured for marking the biggest contribution to Bai Hat Viet 2010.

Bai Hat Viet has been held annually since 2006 to celebrate Vietnamese songwriters. The final round and awards ceremony for Bai Hat Viet 2010 take place over the weekend followed earlier rounds and live performances in March, June and September 2010 and in January of this year. — VNS
