TV channels serious about making people laugh

HCM CITY — Ha Noi and HCM City-based television channels will begin a clutch of new TV serials, several of them comedies, during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays this week.

Work on Nu Hon Dau Xuan (Early Spring Kisses), Nguoi Hoan Hao (A Perfect Man), and Tia Oi, Ve An Tet (Daddy, Back Home for Tet) wrapped up just two weeks ago.

"We make comedies for Tet because audiences like to start the New Year with laughter," Xuan Phuoc, director of the five-part Early Spring Kisses, said.

The serial features pop star Dan Truong and well-known comedian Hoai Linh who lives in the US. Linh returns often to Viet Nam and his performances are hugely popular in both countries.

The seven-episode A Perfect Man made by HCM City Television Film Studio will be shown on HTV7 on New Year's Day, February 3, at 6pm.

"Each of the seven episodes is filled with humorous situations and scenes," director Truong Dung says. "The viewers will be entertained and enjoy a good laugh on the first day of the year.

"We hope Mot Tuan Lam Dau (Living with the In-Laws for a Week) will get a warm reception from viewers," Do Thanh Hai, manager of the Viet Nam Film Company, which has made the serial, said.

The seven-part serial is based on the relationship between a young woman and her mother-in-law and the funny happenings as they work together to prepare for Tet.

Thien Nien Ky, a private studio known for making soap operas by dramatising young people's daily lives, has made its first ever comedy, Tron Tet (Avoiding Tet).

The five-part serial is about three young people working in an office. They decide to go together on a business trip around the country to avoid joining their families during the New Year festivities, and the result is a series of hilarious misadventures. — VNS
