HÀ NỘI -- Trần Quyết Chiến has temporarily taken the No. 1 position in the world at the beginning of the Ankara World Cup 3-Cushion 2024's knockout round in Turkey.
The Vietnamese billiards player took the spot when former leader Kim Jun Tae was ousted from the tournament.
In this round, 32 players are divided into eight groups of four. They will compete in a round robin format and the top two of each group will advance to the next stage.
All four representatives from Việt Nam have earned a place in the quarterfinals. Among them, Chiêm Hồng Thái and Trần Thanh Lực had to compete from the qualification rounds, while world No. 2 Chiến and No. 12 Bao Phương Vinh, both high-ranking seeds, started in the main round.
Following the latest draw, Chiến, known as Tony Trần, will play fellow countryman Lực, Thái will face Egyptian Sameh Sidhom, while the world champion Vinh will face off against Kiraz Tolgahan of Turkey tonight. VNS
