HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Văn Khánh Phong of Việt Nam has advanced to the finals of the Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup’s men’s rings event in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Coach Trương Minh Sang said his athlete performed excellently, bringing him 14,400 points to place fourth in the qualification. He was below gymnasts from Italy and Turkey.
He is one of eight athletes to compete for a medal in the final on Saturday.
Phong is the only Vietnamese to secure a final round berth, while the rest did not have good results on the first day of the competition on Thursday.
Olympian Đinh Phương Thành finished 15th in the men’s parallel bars; Trần Đoàn Quỳnh Nam and Trương Khánh Vân placed 18th and 19th in the women’s vault and Nhã Phương ranked 18th in the uneven bars.
The Baku World Cup is organised at the National Gymnastics Arena from March 31 to April 3. Some 145 gymnasts from 34 countries are competing.
After three competitions of the World Cup are being held in different countries in 2022; the World Cup in Baku is considered the final stage. The three best results out of four will define the holders of the FIG Cup.
There are qualifications on the first two days of events, while finals will occur over the next two days.
In the tournament, the traditional “AGF Trophy” will be presented to the gymnasts who receive the highest execution scores. — VNS
