HA NOI -- Ha Noi FC scored either side of half time to lift their second Super Cup on Saturday at Hang Day Stadium.
Nigerian Hoang Vu Samson netted both goals against Becamex Binh Duong in this season’s curtain raiser.
With home advantage, Ha Noi FC were the faster out of the blocks and despite resting many of their key players, never looked like losing.
Just nine minutes into the game, Samson found himself unmarked in the box after good work down the right flank to head home and give his side the advantage at the interval.
Just past the hour mark, Samson was again in the right place at the right time to tap home from close range and put the game beyond the team from the south.
Binh Duong’s best chances fell at the feet of strikers Nguyen Anh Duc and Sy Giap but both were found wanting in front of goal.
It was Ha Noi’s second Super Cup win after their first in 2010. Manager Chu Dinh Nghiem was proud of his players after the final whistle.
"I am happy with what they did tonight. All of them did good jobs, especially Samson with two goals," said Nghiem.
"The Super Cup match is considered the kick-off of the national football season. This win will be a good start for us. We have set high goals for both local and international tournaments this year," he said.
Nghiem and his players will compete in the AFC Champions League’s play-off match against Shandong Luneng of China on February 19.
"We want to go as far as possible at the continental competition. We are ready for Shandong Luneng," he said.
Ha Noi also defend their V.League title with their first round match against Quang Ninh Coal on February 23.-- VNS
