HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese youngster Nguyễn Anh Khôi won the standard event at the ongoing Asian Junior Chess Championship in Indonesia on Sunday with a round to spare.

The 17-year-old, who has an Elo rating of 2516, took the win with seven wins and a draw to earn 7.5 points.

Despite not yet playing the competition’s ninth match, Khôi was named the winner after amassing an insurmountable lead, one point ahead of second-placed Kaumandur Srihari, Elo 2441, with a better head-to-head record.

Earlier, Khôi also enjoyed victory in the rapid chess event and will soon be awarded the Grandmaster title by the World Chess Federation.

Khôi can compete a hat-trick of titles if he wins the competition’s blitz event. — VNS
