HÀ NỘI — Trần Tuấn Kiệt won the fifth stage of the HCM City Television Cycling Tournament, with riders racing around Hà Nội's Hoàn Kiếm Lake on Sunday.
Kiệt of Dopagan Đồng Tháp pulled a big surprise at the race when he left behind yellow jersey holder Martin Lass of 620 Châu Thới Vĩnh Long and defending champion Petr Rikunov of Lộc Trời Group, respectively, after the 25 laps around the lake for 42.5km.
It was the first win of a local athlete at the nation's largest cycling competition.
The fast speed of the race also helped Ivannov Timofei of HCM City Vinama jump to the top place overall, taking the yellow jersey from Lass.
Igor Frolov of HCM New Group came second and Sawa Novkov of Nhựa Bình Minh-Bình Dương was third.
In the team ranking, HCM New Group, Lộc trời Group and Domesco Đồng Tháp are top three.
After the race, Đoàn Đình Khôi Nguyên, representative of sponsor Tôn Đông Á Company, presented VNĐ100 million to the National Fund For Vietnamese Children and VNĐ50 million to support local students with difficulties.
It was part of the total VNĐ2.5 billion sponsorship that the company would deliver throughout the racing.
The next stage will be from Hà Nội to Thanh Hóa City on 127.5km. VNS
