HA NOI — Nguyen Tien Minh of Viet Nam won his first match at the Viet Nam Open badminton tournament, beating Mek Narongrit of Thailand 21-14, 21-16 yesterday in HCM City.
The No 9 seed will next play No 8 Daren Liew of Malaysia who came from behind to win 16-21, 21-18, 21-9 over NVS Vijetha of India.
Minh had beaten Liew in all six of their previous meetings.
In another men’s singles match, Le Duc Phat lost 19-21, 9-21 to Kodai Noraoka of Japan.
On the women’s side, Nguyen Thuy Linh beat Chua Hui Zhen Grace of Singapore 21-15, 21-14 in 35 minutes, while No 4 seed Vu Thi Trang defeated Hu Ling Fang of Chinese Taipei 21-13, 21-15.
In the mixed doubles, Do Tuan Duc and Pham Nhu Thao advanced to the next round after beating Yantoni Edy Saputra and Marsheilla Gischa Islami of Indonesia 21-18, 21-11. Pham Hong Nam and Le Thu Huyen lost 13-21, 22-20, 13-21 to Wu Yuan Chang and Yang Ching Tun from Chinese Taipei. — VNS
