HA NOI — Nguyen Van Phuong of Viet Nam was ousted from the Australian Open Junior Championship yesterday in Melbourne.
The 17-year-old lost 4-6, 4-6 to top seed Musetti Lorenzo of Italy in the boys’ singles second round. Phuong, world junior number 44, took the lead through a break point in each set. But he failed to maintain his performance, giving world junior number four Lorenzo chances to level the score and eventually win.
Phuong and doubles partner Nicholas David Ionel were defeated 5-7, 2-6 by number eight pair Liam Draxl (Canada) and Zane Khan (the US).
Phuong, who is considered the number two Vietnamese tennis player, will take part in about 30 International Tennis Federation events and Men’s Futures this year. — VNS
