PHNOM PENH Powerlifter Châu Hoàng Tuyết Loan won a gold medal and broke her own old record in the women’s 55kg category at the ASEAN Para Games 12 held in Cambodia on June 5.
Loan lifted 105kg, breaking her old record of 104kg set at the 11th ASEAN Para Games held in Solo City, Indonesia last year.
Loan, 47, is considered the queen of Southeast Asia in the Para Games. She also gained silver medals in the Asia championships in recent years.
In other news, Vietnamese swimmers also made a big splash in the pool on June 5 to bring home more gold medals at the ASEAN Para Games 12 held in Cambodia.
Danh Hòa alone took two gold medals.
Hòa came first in the 200m men’s freestyle, classified S4, after clocking a time of 2 minutes 26.26 seconds to earn the gold medal, leaving behind No Zin of Myanmar who finished with 3:55.37 and Samson Abraham Situmorang of Indonesia with 3:57.85.

While in the men’s 50m breaststroke, classified SB3, Hòa also bagged gold with a time of 49.33secs. Vietnamese Hà Văn Hiệp got a silver medal with a time of 1:1.44.
Not long after, Đỗ Thanh Hải also won the gold medal after finishing first in the men's 50m breaststroke, SB5, with a time of 41.86secs.
Following the success of Hòa and Hải, the swimming team also won three more gold medals by Võ Huỳnh Anh Khoa, Nguyễn Hoàng Nhã and Võ Thanh Tùng.
Khoa beat Thailand and Malaysia rivals to finish first in the men's 100m backstroke, S8, with a time of 1:14.46.
Nhã finished first in the men's 100m backstroke, classified S7, with a time of 1:15.56.
Meanwhile, swimmer Tùng won the gold medal in the men’s 50m butterfly, S5, with a time of 39.58secs. On Sunday, he also claimed gold in the men's 50m backstroke with a time of 41.88.
The Vietnamese swimming team has won a total of 13 gold medals, making a great contribution to the Vietnamese sports delegation in the Games this year.
The previous gold medals belonged to Khoa, Vi Thị Hằng (two), Nguyễn Văn Hanh, Nguyễn Thành Trung, Võ Thanh Tùng, the team of Khoa, Quách Văn Vinh, Nguyễn Ngọc Thiết and Nguyễn Hoàng Nhã (4x100m freestyle).
At the previous ASEAN Para Games, swimmers contributed 27 out of the total 65 gold medals of the Vietnamese team.

In athletics, Nguyễn Thị Hải and Ngô Thị Lan Thanh also shone to win gold medals in two different women’s javelin categories.
