HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thị Tâm has ensured at least a bronze medal from the IBA Women's Boxing Championship, which is being held in New Delhi, India.

The Vietnamese athlete beat No. 3 seed Laura Fuertes Fernandez, last year's bronze medalist, 5-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the women's light flyweight category.

A slot in the semi-finals means that Tâm will earn at least a bronze, the second of Việt Nam from the world championship.

The first one went to Nguyễn Thị Hương in the light heavy class in 2019. Hương, however, was ousted from the first round this year.

Tâm will receive US$25,000 for her third-place finish.

Her bonus will be doubled if she defeats Lkhadiri Wassila of France in the next round. Wassila, who won a bronze at the European championship in 2014 and 2019, defeated No. 7 Cheddar Rabab of Morocco in the other quarter-final match.

She earlier shocked officials and audience by beating No. 2 seed Tsukimi Namiki of Japan in the first round.

The other semi-final match will see Nikhat Zareen of India and Ingrit Lorena Valencia Victoria from Colombia.

Giant killer Zareen won over Raksat Chiuthamat of Thailand on March 22. Earlier, she beat No. 1 Roumaysa Boualam of Algeria.

Meanwhile, No. 5 Valencia Victoria defeated No. 4 Sorrentino Giordana of Italy in the quarter-finals. VNS
