HA NOI — 17-year-old Tiffany Linh Nguyen defeated veteran Tran Thi Tam Hao in the semi-finals of the women’s singles at the National Best Tennis Players Tournament, Vietravel Cup 2017 yesterday.
Nguyen of Becamex Binh Duong beat Hao of Hung Thinh-HCM City 6-1, 6-4.
Hao has won the national senior event many times, while Nguyen only succeeded in taking titles at junior tournaments.
Nguyen’s rival in the final will be Hao’s teammate, Si Boi Ngoc, who defeated Nguyen Thi Be Xuyen of the Military team in the other semi-final match, on December 22.
Earlier, Nguyen beat strong rivals Tran Thuy Thanh Truc of Hung Thinh-HCM City and Phan Thi Thanh Binh of Da Nang to reach the final.
On the men’s side, national defending champion Pham Minh Tuan of Da Nang proved his strength to beat Hoang Thanh Trung of People’s Police 6-3, 6-3.
While former national champion Do Minh Quan lost to Trinh Linh Giang of Becamex Binh Duong 5-7, 3-6.
Tuan will also face Giang in the men’s final on December 22.
The winning players will be selected for the national teams, which will participate in the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup, as well as at the Asian Games next year. — VNS
