Tùng wins two golds at Asian weightlifting championship

HÀ NỘI — Đỗ Tú Tùng won two gold medals at the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championship in South Korea.

The teenager was the No. 1 seed in the men's 55kg class as he has the heaviest registered weight of 268kg.

He proved his power at the Jinju event with a lift of 147kg in the clean and jerk to win a gold. He lifted 116kg in the snatch for the fourth position. His total of 263kg was the best among nine other competitors to bag his second gold.

The 19-year-old won three golds at the 2022 Asian Junior Weightlifting Championship. 

Tùng's teammate Ngô Sơn Đỉnh, who was the second seed, earned three silvers. He lifted 117kg in the snatch, 143kg in the clean and jerk and 260kg in total.

Arli Chontey of Kazakhstan won a gold in the snatch with a 117kg lift. He also secured two bronzes in the clean and jerk (141kg) and the total (258kg).

Mansour Al-Saleem of Saudi Arabia took a bronze in the snatch with 116kg.

Việt Nam also had competitors take part in the women's 45kg and 49kg but they did not succeed.

A 10-strong Vietnamese team landed in South Korea to join nearly 300 competitors in 10 weight categories each for men and women.

The tournament will wrap on May 13 at Jinju Arena. VNS
