Inner Sanctum: Can you introduce yourself and describe your work as a cardiologist and lecturer?
I work as a cardiologist and track director of Heritage running events in Việt Nam. Currently, I am a lecturer at the Faculty of Cardiology at Hà Nội Medical University. Additionally, I work at the Việt Nam National Heart Institute, which is a part of Bạch Mai Hospital. In my roles, I provide theoretical and clinical lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students, treat patients, and perform cardiac interventions

Inner Sanctum: What experiences and challenges have you encountered in your daily work at the Việt Nam National Heart Institute?
The Việt Nam National Heart Institute is a renowned cardiovascular centre, and the workload is substantial. As a leading institution in cardiovascular care and treatment, we continually use new techniques and organise seminars and scientific activities. On average, I work 60 hours and participate in around 30 intervention cases per week.
Inner Sanctum: How do you balance your running hobby with your daily busy work?
Balancing my passion for running with my medical career requires effective planning and prioritisation. I make sure to create a detailed plan and remain disciplined in implementing it. However, as a doctor, I also need to be flexible due to the unpredictability of emergency cases.

Inner Sanctum: What is your role as a running coach and supporter of marathons? Can you share any memorable experiences?
As a running coach and regular supporter of marathons, I aim to help participants achieve high results and create successful running events. I have been involved in organising various running events, and one memorable experience was the Breaking3 marathon in January 2022. Out of the 50 participating athletes, 10 achieved marathon times under three hours. The Hà Nội Marathon Heritage Race 2023 and Hạ Long Bay Heritage Marathon 2023 were also memorable, as many athletes achieved personal records.
Inner Sanctum: What are the benefits of running for cardiovascular health and maintaining a healthy life?
Running, like other forms of physical activity, can help burn excess fat and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Major medical associations recommend regular exercise for these reasons. Running is a particularly popular and accessible sport since it requires minimal equipment and can be done anywhere with just a pair of shoes.
Inner Sanctum: In your work with runners, what common health challenges have you noticed, and how do you help them overcome these difficulties?
One common challenge among runners is the risk of injuries resulting from training too fast, too early, or too much. To address this, I advise controlling exercise volume, avoiding sudden increases, incorporating supplementary exercises like cycling and swimming, practising stretching, ensuring proper rest, and maintaining a nutritious diet. These measures can help reduce the risk of running-related injuries.

Inner Sanctum: What advice would you give to beginner runners looking to improve?
For beginner runners or those seeking to improve, I recommend starting at a slow pace to allow the body to adapt gradually. Setting specific goals and maintaining persistence are key factors in progressing and achieving success in running.
Inner Sanctum: What are your thoughts on the growth of marathon events, and what suggestions do you have for improving organisation and safety?
I believe that the growth of marathons is positive. As events continue to expand, it's important to focus on improving the quality and professionalism of organisation. Organisers should prioritise creating optimal conditions for participants and ensuring safety. By doing so, running can further establish itself as a valued activity within the community.
