Việt Nam win big at muay thai championship

HÀ NỘI — The national Muay Thai team won five gold medals and topped the ranking table of the IFMA Senior World Championships 2023 which closed on May 13 in Thailand.

The tournament saw more than 3,000 participants from 112 countries and territories celebrating the International Federation of Muaythai Associations's (FIMA) 30th anniversary.

After 10 days of competition, Vietnamese athletes won five gold, three silver and seven bronze medals.

Among the title winners, four are U23 athletes.

Mã Thành Đang won in the men's 45kg. Nguyễn Đình Minh Khuê took the men's 48kg. Nguyễn Thị Phương Hậu championed the women's 60kg and Trần Thị Ánh Tuyết triumphed in the women's 75kg.

The young fighters also took three silvers and three bronzes.

Their outstanding performance placed Việt Nam on top of the U23 table. Morroco and the UAE came second and third respectively.

In the elite category, their senior Nguyễn Văn Yên took gold in the men's individual waikru (performance) event.

Huỳnh Hoàng Phi claimed a bronze in the men's 54kg class.

Powerhouse Thailand dominated the elite category with five golds, followed by the US and Turkey.

With a total of five golds in both skill levers, Việt Nam became the number one team in the medal tally.

Malaysia and Thailand placed second and third, respectively. They had the same number of golds but fell short by one silver. VNS
