HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Châu Hoàng Phúc of Việt Nam won a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games 2023 on June 23 in Berlin, Germany.
Phúc performed brilliantly in the qualification rounds of the men's bocce M05 category.
Nguyễn Châu Hoàng Phúc of Việt Nam competes in the men's M05 bocce event.
He beat Katso Molefe of Botswana 6-5, Anousone Phetphongsan of Laos 7-1 and Andrew Robbins of Australia 4-3.
In the final, he met Molefe again and performed even better to beat the Botswanan 6-4 and take the top of the podium.
It was Việt Nam's first gold medal in the Special Olympics.
Nguyễn Ngọc Lan Anh takes part in the women's 25m freestyle swimming Level B, FB02 category.
In other activities, Nguyễn Ngọc Lan Anh finished seventh in women's 25m freestyle swimming.
Nguyễn Đình Toàn came fourth in the men's 25m freestyle swimming and Nguyễn Thị Anh Thư came sixth in the women's 200m running.
The Special Olympics World Games is the world's largest sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities, autism and cerebral palsy.
It is the only sporting event that presents medals for athletes ranking from first to eighth place.
The top eight athletes of every sport receive medals in the Special Olympics.
Some 7,000 athletes and unified partners from approximately 190 countries and territories are competing in 26 sports this year. The competitors are supported by more than 3,000 coaches and 20,000 volunteers.
