VN won't play friendly against Liverpool

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s national football team won’t play a friendly with Liverpool FC in Hà Nội this summer, the Việt Nam Football Federation (VFF) General Secretary Lê Hoài Anh has confirmed.

According to Anh, the negotiations broke down due to the English Premier League side’s busy schedule.

“As Liverpool have competed well in the UEFA Champions League and qualified for the quarter-finals the two sides haven’t sorted their summer competition schedules and the friendly match is cancelled,” Anh told zing.vn.

However, it seems unlikely the friendly was ever on the cards, as the English side never commented on the May match Anh discussed publicly in January.

Liverpool will face FC Porto in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on April 10 and 18 and are favourites to progress to the semi-finals.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are also locked in a tight title race, trailing leaders Manchester City by a single point with six games to go.

Instead of playing with Liverpool, Việt Nam will compete in the King’s Cup in Thailand in June.

Previously, Việt Nam played friendlies with Arsenal in 2013 and Manchester City in 2017. — VNS
