HÀ NỘI — Trịnh Văn Vinh has become Việt Nam's sixth representative at the Paris Olympics this summer.
Vinh and teammate Nguyễn Trần Anh Tuấn took part in the group B of the men's 61kg at the International Weightlifting Federation World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, on April 2.
Tuấn did a good job with 132kg in snatch and took a bronze. However he failed in all three attempts in clean&jerk because of injury, leading to no overall ranking.
With a resuts of 131kg in snatch, 163kg in clean&jerk and 294kg in total, Vinh placed No 6 overall and confirmed his No 9 in the world ranking as the Thai event is the last qualification round of weightlifting.
As per rule, Olympic spots will be given to top 10 athletes of each caregory where each country will have only one representative, and no more than three men and three women per nation are qualified for Paris.
Prior to his competition in Thailand, Vinh had hard training plan although his injury had not totally recovered.
Vinh used to be Việt Nam's most potential lifter as he secured a number of titles from world championships and world cups. However, he was suspended for four years because of unintended doping use. He just returned to competition in early 2023.
With Vinh's achievement, Việt Nam's weightlifting will have the sixth time in a row competing in the Olympics from 2004-24.
Five other Olympians of Việt Nam are cyclist Nguyễn Thị Thật, markswomen Trịnh Thu Vinh and Lê Thị Mộng Tuyền (bắn súng), swimmer Nguyễn Huy Hoàng and boxer Võ Thị Kim Ánh. VNS
