When it comes to a sandwich, which is best? Are you a BLT kind of guy? Or perhaps cheese and tomato is more your thing?
Over in Hoi An there’s only one place to go when it comes to a tasty snack and that’s Banh Mi Phuong.
Six years ago, the late chef Anthony Bourdain popped in and described his banh mi as a ‘symphony in a sandwich’ – and it seems food lovers the world over took note.
His critique has done the store no harm at all and business has boomed since that day.
There are now as many customers coming for selfies as they are for sandwiches.
Tourist Julie Chapman from New Zealand said: “This place was recommended and a lot of people want to come here so that’s good for the family that owns the restaurant.
“I think it’s the way they cook the meat and I don’t think I could recreate that at home. I would give it a crack but I’m not sure it would taste as good.”
Phuong Lan, whose family own the restaurant, said: “This banh mi is the best in Hoi An. It’s very good because the vegetables are very good, the food tastes very good.
“It’s fresh food and we have been selling them a long time.”
It has also had rave reviews on the travel website Trip Advisor.
“Must visit in Hoi An,” wrote one reviewer yesterday.
Another added this week: “Always packed, always friendly and always welcoming, this fantastic place was a highlight of our trip.”-VNS
