HCM CITY — A rare Vietnamese satin, called My A, will be featured in clothes for women and men by young fashion designers at the catwalk event "The Dreamers" in HCM City next month.

More than 75 designs selected from the latest collections by Hang Nguyen, Huynh Tien, Nguyen Minh Cong, and Juun Dang Dung will be presented.

Highlighted clothes will be ready-to-wear productions in My A satin, which is often used in ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress).

“We spent a fact-finding trip to Hong Ngu District in An Giang Province, which has been famous for its traditional satins My A and Tan Chau for several hundred years. We met and learnt a lot from local artisans who have worked hard to keep their handicraft alive,” said Cong, a top-five finalist in Project Runway Viet Nam 2014, a Vietnamese version of the American reality TV show.

“We used My A satin in our designs because of its beauty and quality,” he said.

In 2003, My A was introduced in designs for the collection Mo Ve Chau A (Dream of Asia) by Vo Viet Chung, who had just returned home after a two-year training course organised by the Europe Fashion Federation in Italy and Denmark.

Chung’s clothes in My A left a strong impression on audiences.

Later, Chung displayed his collection on the Mega-F Diamond Cruise Ship chartered by the Fashion TV (FTV) channel. The five-star cruise ship first arrived in HCM City’s Nha Rong Wharf in 2008, after stops in several Asian countries including Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

His collections in Vietnamese silk and satin were broadcast on the FTV channel in 2010.

“Through The Dreamers, we hope to encourage the use of Vietnamese materials in fashion,” said female designer Hang Nguyen.

The Dreamers will also kick off the AMI Fashion Show, a non-profit fashion project promoting young fashion models and designers launched by a group of young enterprises.

The show will take place at 8pm on October 13 at Adora Luxury in 198 Hoang Van Thu Street in Phu Nhuan District.— VNS
