Filmmaking contest names winners

HÀ NỘI — Young Vietnamese filmmakers will have the chance to compete in the final round of a filmmaking contest in Japan.

They are the winners of the Kid Witness News (KWN) filmmaking contest launched by Panasonic Vietnam. The contest was held for secondary and high school students in Hà Nội.

“Each film tells me a different story and shows the student’s deep care about the earth, environment, family, friends and various matters they observe,” said Kazuhiro Matsushita, General Director of Panasonic Vietnam.

“Their views are clear, and the way of expressing is unique. By learning to make films, they can better understand what is happening in daily life and express their opinions about those matters.”

A film entitled Con Nhà Người Ta (Other Families’ Kids) earned first prize in the 10-12 year old category for the Flames crew. The crew includes five members from Trung Tự Primary and Ban Mai Primary schools.

The film is about a social issue that many parents often compare their children with others’ and always want them to achieve. This puts too much pressure on their child.

The first prize for 13-18 year old students went to the Emmanuel group with the film Sân Chơi (Playground). It was inspired by the true story of students in the group about their difficulties in finding a basketball court, a legitimate need but still hard-to-have for many young people today.

KWN is a film-making contest around the world that has been organised by Panasonic to improve communication, creativity and promoting co-operation through the films made by students.

It has been held annually in Việt Nam since 2006. This year, the contest received 154 submissions with themes about the environment, communication, sports and sustainable development.

Of which, sustainable development is a new topic this year encouraging students to better understand the United Nations’ sustainable development goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that everyone enjoys peace and prosperity.

Held on Saturday, the contest also presented other awards including two second prizes, promising prize, film-editing prize, camera prize and design prize. — VNS
