HA NOI — For the second week of the “Classic Black-and-White Movie Month”, the Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) on May 11 will present a screening of the French crime/drama movie Breathless.

A French New Wave film written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard, Breathless is about a wandering criminal (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his American girlfriend (Jean Seberg). The movie is not only Godard’s first feature-length work, but also represents Belmondo’s breakthrough as an actor.

Breathless was one of the earliest, most influential examples of French New Wave (nouvelle vague) cinema. Together with François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows and Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima, Mon Amour, both released a year earlier, it brought international acclaim to this new style of French filmmaking. At the time, the film attracted attention for its bold visual style, which included unconventional use of jump cuts. When originally released in France, the film attracted over 2 million viewers.

A fully restored version of the film was released in the US for its 50th anniversary in May 2010.

TPD will present the movie in original French with Vietnamese subtitles. Donation (at the door): VND20,000/person. The screening will start at 7.30pm. TPD is at 51 Tran Hung Dao Street (4th floor), Tel: (024) 39366559. — VNS
