World’s leading conceptual art artist presents work in VN for first time

HÀ NỘI — For the first time, the public in Việt Nam will be introduced to the works of Japanese female artist Chiharu Shiota, one of the world's leading names in conceptual art.

Her creations are on display at a large-scale installation exhibition taking place at the Vincom Centre for Contemporary Art (VCCA) in Hà Nội.

Entitled A Tide of Emotions, the exhibition features works that the Japanese artist created exclusively for the VCCA space, as a response to the unique, poetic architecture here.

Using red thread – a material characteristic of her artistic practice, and with her hands, she has weaved the threads of life, transforming ordinary, everyday materials into magnificent works of art. Hundreds of thousands of threads are like paths intertwining the past and present, evoking the calligraphy of an ancient and traditional world with thousands of looms.

In her innermost feelings world, Shiota is an alchemist who forges work with the gentle touch of memory, the sanctity of the homeland, silent and profound migrations and the dance between life and death.

In a palette of crimson colours, she discovers the echo of her soul mingling a praise of the warmth of life.

The exhibition A Tide of Emotions is the first event of artist Shiota in Việt Nam that presents a universal message and profound humanistic meaning.

One of the most influential Asian female artists in contemporary art in the world, through decades of adventures in the art world, Shiota has constantly experimented and challenged herself in every creative field, from the ephemeral dance of performance art to the silent reverie of the language of paintings, from the tangible whispers of sculptures to the sensory immersion of the language of installation art.

Shiota's art practice is a combination of many different aspects of installation and performance art. She is well-known for her large-scale installations, which are meticulously and skilfully strung from hundreds of thousands of red threads and frequently take up entire spaces. That network connects to concrete objects of everyday life such as keys, windows, dresses, shoes, boats or suitcases,... collected from all over the world – implies reminding people of the interconnection with all things, the unpredictable intertwining of fate, and the importance of memories stored in each human heart.
