HA NOI — Thirty paintings of renowned Vietnamese artist Nguyen Tu Nghiem (1922-2016) are being exhibited in downtown Ha Noi to commemorate his first death anniversary.

Titled Tuong Nhu Con Day (As If Everything Were Here), the paintings, from various stages of the artist’s life, will help the audience understand the philosophy of a man who rarely exhibited his paintings. The paintings include well-known works such as Tet Trung Thu (Mid-autumn Festival, 1960), Tre Em Choi Ve (Kids Paint, 1960) and Au Co-Lac Long Quan (2015). A self-portrait lacquer painting is also on display.

The exhibition will run at the Ngan Pho Gallery, 82 Hang Gai Street, till June 25. The gallery has hosted Nghiem’s works twice before, in 1980 and in 2015.

“I remember my visits to Nguyen Tu Nghiem. He was full of enthusiasm to draw even in his last few months,” said Nguyen Trung Thanh, a representative of Ngan Pho Gallery. “I feel as if he is still around.” — VNS
