HA NOI – To celebrate a century of Dada, an art movement of the European avant-garde in the early 20th century, Ha Noi Doclab will bring a performance of video in the background to semi-improvised music, entitled Dada Live, to capital audiences on August 4.
The performances, which are provided by the band Cabaret Maxim and other artists, will consist of live saxophone, improvised by sopranino on a mixed background of disco, funk and house.
Cabaret Maxim is a band comprised of two members, drummer and DJ Antoine and saxophonist Maxime.
Hai Duy is a drummer and jazz keyboardist. His solo performance is full of energy and dynamism. His journey to find his own sound brings listeners to an unknown territory, blended between complicated rhythm and strong structures to create a wall of sound.
Nguyen Do Minh Quan is one of the most creative artists in Ha Noi. He has a special ability to control his musical instrument to create a new and different improvised sound world.
The Dada movement is free experimentation that does not have a certain expression, and is almost impossible to define. One of the founders of the movement, Tristan Tzara, has stated Dada means nothing. This new anti-art approach opened the door for personal freedom of expression of artists, which ultimately shaped today’s contemporary art as we know it.
Dadaist films also break the usual rules of conventional filmmaking, non-narrative, nonsensical, experimental both in form and in content. They often play with motion and montage. Works by Man Ray, Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp, Fernard Leger and other artists will be displayed at the celebration.
Ha Noi Doclab is located at 56 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Ba Dinh District.
Entrance ticket is VND80,000 (US$3,58). The show starts at 9pm. — VNS
