A film screening of the opera Salome, Op 54, staged by the UK’s Royal Opera House in 2010, will be held at the Culture Café Salon on April 24 in HCM City.

The one-act opera's music was composed by German composer Richard Strauss and the German libretto written by Hedwig Lachamnn. It  was based on the 1891 French play Salomé by Oscar Wilde.

It was first performed in 1905 at the Saxon State Opera in Dresden, Germany.

The Royal Opera House’s production, created by director David McVicar, was performed in 2008.

The opera tells the story of Salome, stepdaughter of Herod, and her father’s prisoner John the Baptist. Herod promises to give her anything she wants if she dances for him. She dances, and Salome demands from Herod the head of John the Baptist. Horrified, Herod gives the order. Salome ecstatically receives her bloody reward.

The screening is part of the Saigon Classical Music Group’s project “From Alpha to Opera” which introduces the world’s classical operas and ballets.

The programme will begin at 2pm at 264A Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa Street in District 3. Participants can register for the event at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/148709709745. VNS
