HÀ NỘI — Photos and documents about the renowned Chilean female poet Gabriela Mistral’s life and career are on display at an exhibition now being held at the National Library of Việt Nam.
The exhibition, titled Gabriela Mistral 70 years after Receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature: The Daughter of a New Nation, is jointly organised by the Chilean Embassy in Việt Nam and the National Library of Việt Nam.
Attending the event's opening ceremony were Chilean Ambassador Jaime Chomali and representatives of the National Library of Việt Nam and the Chilean Embassy in Việt Nam, as well as students from many universities in Việt Nam.
Gabriela Mistral is one of the most outstanding writers in the history of Latin-American literature. She received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945 and became the first Latin-American woman to be granted the award. Lucila de Maria Godoy Alcayaga – the real name of the poet – also succeeded in education and diplomacy, among other fields.
According to Chilean Ambassador to Việt Nam Jaime Chomali, the exhibition is a brief reflection on Mistral’s life and career. She became a part of the soul of Chile’s poetry, together with poets Pablo Neruda, Vicente Huidobro and Pablo de Rocka.
Chile has often been dubbed the land of poets.
Ambassador Chomail said the exhibition would help Vietnamese audiences understand more about Chile’s literature and contribute to relations between the two nations.
Many photos about the female poet’s career are being revealed to the public for the first time, in addition to several dossiers preserved in the National Library of Chile, the Chilean Embassy, and in the Gabriela Mistral Library, which are all associated with her Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945.
On the occasion, the Chilean Embassy is presenting awards to the winners of a writing contest celebrating the 130th anniversary of the renowned female poet’s birthday.
The contest was jointly held by the Chilean Embassy in Việt Nam, the Spanish department at Hanoi University, and the Department of Spanish Linguistics and Literature at Vietnam National University Hồ Chí Minh City.
