Every month, many ships deliver supplies to Vietnamese soldiers on the Truong Sa Archipelago in the East Sea.
Sailors on the ship are tasked with maintaining a lifeline between mainland and the islands by making sure much-needed supplies arrive safely and on time. During the voyage, besides performing their regular duties, fishing at night is a favorite activity for the sailors.
Flying fish, found in abundance in this part of the ocean, are used as bait to catch bigger fish.
Handlining and droplining are the two most common fishing methods among the sailor. Fishing lines 30-50m long are used to get to large bottom feeders. This fishing is not just a past-time hobby, the catch is a welcome addition to their daily meals.
Their catch typically includes snapper, tuna and mackerel, with even smaller ones weighing around 5kg. — VNS
