HA NOI — Ton That Nhat Tan of Da Nang won the third Trang Co Dat Viet, a year-end Chinese chess tournament for eight best athletes in Ninh Binh Province.
At the matches held on Sunday, the 41-year-old won two games and drew one in the group round.
He then beat Nguyen Anh Man, also from Da Nang, in the semi-finals and overcame Tran Quoc Viet from Binh Duong to take the title.
Tan became the third winner of the tournament after Pham Quoc Huong of Ha Noi in 2013 and Trenh A Sang of HCM City in 2015. Tan was the first runner-up in 2015.
Trang Co Dat Viet lured more than 600 athletes competing in the qualification rounds. They then advanced to the finals of three regions. The regional champions and runners-up and two wide-card holders participated in the national finals. Tan was the central region winning master. — VNS
