HCM CITY— The HCM City Drama Theatre has launched a theatre project aimed at secondary school students that offers talks and performances by veteran artists.
Famous excerpts from historical plays will be featured by veteran artists, such as Meritorious Artist My Uyen and Anh Tuan.
“We will bring our audiences closer to the art,” said Tung, who works as a lecturer for the HCM City University of Theatre and Cinematography.
Young talents of the theatre, including Khanh Van and Thanh Phuong, kicked off the event last Thursday. They staged the event for 700 students at Tran Khai Nguyen Secondary School in District 5.
The play 18 Tuoi (Teen Age) was about youth and love by director Thai Kim Tung.
Director Tung used both Eastern and Western styles to feature the play’s theme, urban girls and social problems.
“Tung’s play is about a well-worn topic, love, which brings new messages and includes new concepts for the theatre,” Nguyen Le Anh Thu, an 11th grade student at the school, said.
Tung and his actors will tour seven secondary schools in districts 5, 3, 1 and Phu Nhuan this month. They will also offer free shows for students at Cong Nhan Theatre in District 1.
Tung is also the head of the private the Vi Dau Drama Troupe of District 1.
His troupe was initially composed of only three members in 2012, but now has 30 young actors from the city’s drama clubs and art schools.
“We can give young actors the opportunity to develop their techniques and ways of emotional expression while still at school," he said.
Tung said that his staff will stage a series of three-act plays on love, family and social issues, such as Tinh Yeu Muon Mau (Colours of Love) and Yeu Khong De (Love Is Not a Game).
“We will try to perfect our works in the hope that drama will entertain students in a very different way to film,” he said.
The drama project for secondary school students will end late this year.— VNS
