Canadian women introduce 17 stories to Vietnamese public

HA NOI — An anthology of 17 short stories by Canadian women, chosen and introduced by Elizabeth Mclean, will be introduced to the Vietnamese public this month.

"By introducing these stories to Vietnamese readers, I would like to invite you to enter the fictional homes of our Canadian families and be surprised," Mclean said.

The book is about human suffering and life gone wrong, of love lost but also found, of tears and laughter, of the ridiculous and the sublime. In spite of differences in culture and perspective between Viet Nam and Canada, readers may find common threads and shared values, Mclean said.

The 408-page book is being promoted by the Canadian embassy and the Viet Nam Women's Publishers.

The contest, which runs until the end of April, aims to encourage children's imagination and creativity as they express their view of a perfect playground, said Le Tien Thanh, head of the ministry's Primary Education Department.

Dutch Lady Viet Nam, the contest's sponsor, will hand out six prizes worth VND400 million (US$19,000) to the paintings that come up with the most feasible playground for the school in which the contestant is a student. — VNS
