HCM CITY — Buddhist Cultural Week, organised to celebrate the Buddha’s 2,561st birth anniversary, kicked off at Pho Quang Pagoda in HCM City on Monday night.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Venerable Thich Nhat Tu, head of the committee’s Cultural Board, said the special week was held to honour and promote the values of Buddhism and to encourage people to honour their mothers and pay tribute to their parents.
The event, which includes art exhibitions, musical performances and a food fair, is an opportunity to introduce Buddhist culture to the public.
More than 500 photos, paintings, calligraphy works and sculptures by local and overseas artists and sculptors are on display at the “Hoa Hieu Hanh” (Flowers Devoted to Parents) art exhibition.

The event features 31 stalls showcasing Buddhist scriptures, books, tapes, paintings and statues of Buddha.
A food fair introducing vegetarian food from different regions of the country is also included.
A Buddhist musical performance will be held on August 27 at Hoa Binh Theatre in District 10 to raise funds to build 183 houses in Tay Ninh Province for Vietnamese returning from Cambodia.
The show will feature famous singers Le Quyen, Ngoc Son, Hien Thuc, Nguyen Phi Hung and Vo Ha Tram.
The Buddhist Cultural Week will run until August 27 at 64 Huynh Lan Khanh Street in Tan Binh District.
The event was organised by the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha Executive Committee in HCM City. — VNS
