HA NOI — Members of Big Toe (Ngon Chan Cai) dance crew have walked away with four individual prizes at dance competitions in France and Germany.

Break dancer Small Turtle (Hoang Ky Anh) won the Who iz Who Underground 3 competition while Pham Khanh Linh came in second place in the Jam Session battle.

Vu Tung Phuong won first place prizes in both competitions for popping (a hip-hop dance style using the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body).

Fifteen-year-old Small Turtle said that he gave 100 per cent to his performance in the competition. In 2010, he brought home a championship prize for his break dancing in R16 Southeast Asia Final held in Malaysia.

Phuong, who has pursued popping since 2004, has spent a lot of time studying with French dancers. He became a nationwide champion in the Floor Killer Tour 2010 which was organised by the crew. His showings in France and Germany were his first international performances.

"I learn from other dancers by watching their moves. While I was performing, I did not really believe I would win first prize because the French and German dancers are among the best in the world. I suppose I was lucky," shared Phuong.

Big Toe crew leader Nguyen Viet Thanh said: "Anh has natural talent. One year of practice for him has been equal to many years of practice for others. And Phuong takes pains to learn from other dancers via the internet everyday."

Both of the competitions were open to dancers from throughout the world. Participants had to register and pay their own accommodation and travel expenses.
